QUESTION: A university professor includes a copyrighted article on his/her web site to enable each student in class to obtain a copy of it. Is this in violation of copyright laws?
ANSWER: If the web site is restricted to a particular
domain such as, the university, then the professor is not in violation
of copyright law. If the professor puts a required password onto the site
in order to restrict access which would only allow students to get through,
then this would also be in accordance to the law. If the web site
is on an unrestricted server the professor could be considered to have
broken copyright laws.
